Description

Wintergreen essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Gaultheria procumbens. Its sweet, minty aroma comes almost entirely from methyl salicylate, which makes up around 96–99% of the oil, and it is a strong, penetrating middle note.

Its warming, minty character has long made it a traditional favourite in post-exercise rubs, and a drop or two in a diffuser brings a fresh, sweet, minty aroma to a room. It pairs with peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary. Wintergreen needs real care: it is toxic if swallowed, even in small amounts, must be kept locked away from children and pets, and should be avoided if you take blood-thinning medication.

  • Sweet, fresh, intensely minty aroma
  • Strong, penetrating note, so a drop or two is plenty
  • A traditional favourite in warming post-exercise rubs
  • Pairs well with peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary and ginger

Blends well with: Cedarwood, eucalyptus, ginger, lavender, marjoram, peppermint and rosemary

Uses

  • Diffuser or vaporiserAdd 1–2 drops to your diffuser or oil burner with water for a fresh, minty room aroma, ideally blended with lavender or eucalyptus.
  • BathNot recommended for the bath.
  • Massage and aromatherapyNot recommended for general massage. If you use it in aromatherapy or other skin applications, always dilute it in a carrier oil at a very low level (no more than 1%, roughly 6 drops per 30ml), only on small areas of adult skin, and never if you take blood-thinning medication. Patch test first.
